Sargassum is a type of floating brown seaweed that can form large mats in the ocean. While it plays a role in marine ecosystems, in recent decades excessive blooms of sargassum have led to a triple crisis (environmental, economic and social) in the affected coastal communities. 

The Caribbean is a region rich in biodiversity, cultural heritage, and economic resources. Protecting it is crucial because its ecosystems, such as coral reefs and mangroves, support marine life, local economies, and tourism. Environmental degradation, including sargassum invasions and climate change, threatens these vital resources and the well-being of communities dependent on them. 

Local communities in the Caribbean face numerous challenges due to the climate crisis. Rising sea levels, increased storm intensity, and sargassum invasions impact agriculture, tourism, and public health. Coastal communities, especially those dependent on fishing and tourism, are experiencing economic losses, reduced livelihoods, and increased health risks.  Affecting their possibility of economic development. 

By participating in our programs or volunteering, you can gain valuable experience in marine conservation, blue economy, ocean literacy, etc. Volunteers and program participants often enhance their resumes, gain hands-on experience, and contribute to meaningful projects that address pressing environmental issues.

These initiatives aim to educate about marine conservation, ocean science, the climate crisis, the impacts of sargassum, and the importance of sustainable practices. We offer educational sessions on ocean science, climate action, marine conservation, blue economy, sargassum management, and environmental sustainability. Our Coastal Sanitation efforts aim to manage and mitigate the impact of sargassum on coastal areas. We implement SOS Carbon sargassum harvesting systems, the Littoral Collection Module (LCM), employing local fishermen, engaging local communities in cleanup activities, and work to improve coastal health, which are crucial for protecting marine ecosystems and local economies. 

We measure the success of our programs through a combination of quantitative and qualitative indicators, such as the amount of sargassum collected, the number of community members trained, the number of volunteers, the number of partnerships and the feedback from participants. 

Terra & Marre ensures the sustainability of its projects by incorporating community engagement, continuous monitoring, and adaptive management strategies. We focus on building local capacity, fostering partnerships, and integrating feedback to improve our initiatives. Our projects are designed to be scalable and adaptable to changing environmental conditions and community needs.
